Karen graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelors of Science degree in mathematics and a teaching certificate. She taught junior and senior high math in Shoreline, Washington before moving to Germany for three years with her husband, Dan. While in Europe and between Dan's jobs, her substitute teaching at a US Army school, and studying German in night school, they were able to travel. Back in Seattle, Karen began teaching middle school math. She has taught part-time at Concordia since 1989. One of Karen's priorities is to ensure that students are successful and confident in middle school math skills so that they continue to take math for four years in high school. Outside of school, Karen enjoys beachcombing in any weather, mind puzzles, historical fiction and crafting.
